Think about that for a moment… “Press in and Press Forward”. The very act of pressing in will ultimately press you forward towards your inevitable end-state. I picture a person leaning into and putting pressure on an object such as a rock at an opening to a cave. How badly do you want that rock, that obstacle to be removed so you can get out from behind it? You decide the opening is shut too tight and the boulder is far too heavy for you to do this on your own, so you call a few friends to help. Pressing in with your whole self and the bodies of your friends; once again putting pressure on this rock to be removed, you finally pray and ask God, “Lord how much more pressure do you need for us to put on this side of the rock before You will allow it to move”?
We all know in our hearts that God can simply speak to that rock and tell it to move (as He gives us the power to as well), but how often do we get caught up wondering “if” He will choose to move the rock on our behalf? Sometimes, He may want to see how much of ourselves we are willing to give, or how much we are willing to believe that He is who He says He is prior to shifting our circumstances. Pressing in long enough and hard enough builds the spiritual muscles needed to believe for the next big thing God has for us to do. I love it… in God’s economy we don’t just workout to look “hot” for the next party, His spiritual muscles last waaay beyond the next scheduled event. And by pressing in past ourselves, and encouraging others to press in with us gives us all an opportunity to participate in God’s blessings of favour and an increase of faith when we see Him come through for us or our friends in the midst of their circumstances.
With enough pressing in, we are bound to move the boulders of our lives. God responds to faith. If we continue pressing in (in both the natural and spiritual realm), He will respond to the faith we are demonstrating; knowing that we believe He will give us the strength to move that immense thing forward on our behalf.
What’s the ‘big thing’ you’re trying to press past today? A failing marriage? A rebellious child? Financial troubles? What’s your boulder? I encourage you to press into that boulder and ask God to help you push… press in to press forward. He is a good and faithful God and is WELL ABLE to do whatever we ask, hope or think. And remember… sometimes you have to press in in-order to press forward.
New International Version (NIV)
13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
